JazzTIMES’ “Young Mallet Master”

Downbeat Critics Poll #1 Rising Star Vibraphonist

NPR Jazz Night in America's Class of 2024 Youngbloods

Winner of Letter One Rising Stars Jazz Award 2019

Berliner is already a very mature instrumentalist […] maybe she’s the best vibraphone player to emerge in decades.
— Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Brazilian record producer (Verve, CTI, Sony), music historian, and journalist.
She has already asserted herself as a creative, genre-defying composer and excellent bandleader with a sixth sense of yet-unheard possibilities.
— Burlington Discover Jazz Festival
Berliner plays, composes and leads her band with maturity and artistic presence rarely attained. […] Berliner is in the firmament of the here and now in modern jazz, and appears likely to occupy that upper stratosphere for some time to come.
— Paul Rauch, All About jazz

Sasha Berliner’s NEW 3rd studio album, “Fantome”, TBR Spring 2025

Recorded at Electric Garden in Brooklyn, NY in April 2024. Engineered and mixed by Ben Kane.

Praise for 2nd studio album, “Onyx”:

The seamless unity of melody and rhythm on Berliner’s latest is an absolute joy to experience […] I could have listened to a multi-volume recording of Berliner and (Marcus) Gilmore doing their thing, and still complained that the end came too soon.
— Bandcamp daily
From the outset, Sasha Berliner puts her cards on the table with a writing that is both dense and colorful, revealing the extent of her talents as a leader and composer.
— Sorties Jazz Nights

LIVE BAND REVIEWS

Finnish review of Sasha Berliner Quartet (double bill with Gretchen Parlato) at Savoy Jazz Fest in Helsinki, 2024:

Two top female jazz artists created a spellbinding evening of shimmering vibes and breathy vocals in the Finnish capital. […] The slow-burning ‘Jinx!’ was breathtaking, with Berliner gradually raising the stakes, eventually showing her blindingly fast, intricate mallet improv in the upper register. Berliner showcased the delicate, shimmering side of her sound on an unaccompanied arrangement of ‘My Funny Valentine’.

JazzTimes review of Sasha Berliner at Vibes Summit, Newport Jazz Festival, 2021:

First came the Quad stage’s “Vibes Summit” featuring Warren Wolf, Joel Ross, and Sasha Berliner—kind of like an old-fashioned cutting session, but with three vibraphones. Of course they began with a 12-bar; Wolf’s solo was about virtuosity, Berliner’s about angularity, and Ross’ about the power of repetition.[…] Berliner took over with a remarkable solo four-mallet arrangement of “My Funny Valentine” that conjured rippling surf…

NYC Jazz Record’s review of Sasha Berliner Quartet at BRIC Jazz Festival, 2019:

“Sasha Berliner was flying over the metal bars as the head of her quartet AZALEA. She’s a former drummer, with a decidedly percussive approach to her melody making, and like (Blue Note vibraphonist Joel) Ross, often seemed to pause in the middle of a musical thought, catching her breath for a millisecond.”
